I was in Cambodia in December '01 and was wondering if anyone here could help me with a little information.
My friend and I came in to Siem Reap by pickup from Poi Pet and spent a terrific week visiting the big sights in the area (Angkor Wat, floating village etc.). But just before we planning to move on to Pnom Penh we heard about 'these temples in the north' that were at least as impressive as what we had seen already. My friend and I along with another traveller we met somehow talked our three moto drivers into taking us up there. It's a long story which I won't bother relating here (unless there is a deluge of interest of course) but it almost ended with me and the third traveller separated from the others lost in the jungle after dark somewhere off the road between Kampong Thom and what I can only guess was Tbeang Mean Chey. Obviously we finally found our way out and kind family mercifully put us up for the night but we never got to the temple we were looking for.
We had spent the night before in TBC where we met an Australian who said the 'big' temple of Preah Vihear was another six hours and a good climb away but that there was another temple about two hours back and some 40km west of the logging road we came in on. The 13 hour ordeal of getting to TBC (which, again, I won't get into here) and our schedule made the prospect of going further north less attractive so the next morning we set out on our doomed search for this temple. Of course we never made it and managed to get separated before getting lost.
What I would like to know is:
1) does anyone know of this temple approximately two hours (south) from TBC and ~40 km west of the logging road to Kampong Thom? (coordinates are very approximate of course)
and
2) are there any decent maps of the area available?
That trip was a total disaster on account of my complete lack of foresight and planning which almost led me to my well deserved end! However, I would very much like to return and see the temple I came so close to finding (before there's a two lane highway with package tours).
Again, any information on this temple or a map of the area would be appreciated.
